Your Instagram data download, file by file.
You opened the ZIP and found hundreds of folders and files with names like followers_1.json. Here’s what the important ones contain — and how to read them without opening a single file.
Followers and following
connections/followers_and_following/followers_1.json— everyone who follows you, with the date they followed. Big accounts getfollowers_2.json,followers_3.json… — they belong together.following.json— every account you follow, with the date you followed it.close_friends.json— your Close Friends list.pending_follow_requests.json— requests you sent to private accounts that were never accepted.follow_requests_you've_received.json— people waiting for you to accept them.recently_unfollowed_profiles.json— accounts you unfollowed recently (not who unfollowed you).blocked_profiles.json,restricted_profiles.json,hide_story_from.json— your block, restrict and hidden-story lists.
Comparing two downloads of these files is how you can see who unfollowed you.
Your activity
likes/liked_posts.json— every post you liked, with the account and the date.comments/post_comments_1.jsonandreels_comments.json— every comment you wrote and where.story_likes.json— stories you liked.saved/saved_posts.json— your saved posts.recent_searchesfiles — what you searched for.
Search all of them at once in the Likes & comments finder.
Your messages
messages/inbox/<name>_<number>/message_1.json— one folder per conversation; long chats continue inmessage_2.jsonand so on. Photos, videos and voice notes sit in the same folder.
The texts use an escaped encoding, so emojis and accents look broken in a text editor. The Message viewer shows every chat like a messenger.
Your posts, stories and reels
media/posts_1.json(older exports:content/posts_1.json) — your posts with captions and dates.media/stories.json,reels.json,archived_posts.json,profile_photos.json.- The photos and videos themselves, in
media/folders by month.
Browse them as a gallery in Posts & stories.
Ads and privacy
advertisers_using_your_activity_or_information.json— companies that uploaded a customer list that matched you, or target you by your activity.ads_interests.json/your_topics.json— the interests Instagram assigned to you.ads_viewed.json,posts_viewed.json,videos_watched.json— what you saw.login_activity.json— when and from which devices and IP addresses you logged in.
The Privacy X-ray turns these into an exposure grade from A to F.
JSON or HTML?
Both contain the same information. JSON is easier for tools to read reliably; HTML is meant for reading in a browser. Unwrapped reads both — drop the ZIP as it is, even in several parts.
FAQ
What is followers_1.json?
It’s the list of everyone who follows you, from your Instagram data download, with the date each person followed. Large accounts are split into followers_1.json, followers_2.json and more.
Does the download show who unfollowed me?
Not directly. It shows who follows you now. Comparing two downloads made at different times reveals who left.
Is it safe to upload my Instagram ZIP to a website?
Only if the site never sends it to a server — the files contain your messages and other people’s names. Unwrapped reads everything in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
