Can you recover deleted Instagram messages?

What “deleted” really means

• Unsent messages are removed for both people. They don’t come back.
• Deleting a chat removes it from your inbox. The other person still has their copy.
• Lost chats — after a long time, a username change or a deactivated account, conversations can simply be hard to find in the app even though they still exist.

Where your data download helps

Instagram’s “Download your information” includes the messages it still keeps for your account — often years of conversations, with photos, voice notes and links. That covers chats you can’t find anymore, chats with people who changed their name, and very old messages the app takes ages to scroll to.

1. Request your data: Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information → Messages, JSON, with media.
2. Drop the ZIP on the Message viewer.
3. Search every chat at once for a word, a name or a link.

What it can’t do

• It can’t restore messages that were unsent or that Instagram has permanently removed.
• It can’t show the other person’s chats with someone else.
• Disappearing (vanish mode) messages aren’t kept.

Watch out for “recovery” apps

Apps that promise to recover deleted DMs usually need your Instagram password — and they can’t access anything Instagram doesn’t keep. At best they show you your own data download; at worst your account gets locked or stolen. See why login apps are risky.

Ask the other person

If you deleted a chat on your side, the other person may still have it. Their own data download includes it too.
