How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram — safely.
Instagram never tells you when someone unfollows, and it has no “unfollowers” list. But it does let you download your own followers list. With two of those downloads, you can see exactly who left.
The short answer
- Download your Instagram data (only Followers and following, format JSON).
- Drop the ZIP into Unwrapped. You instantly see who doesn’t follow you back, and your list is saved as a private snapshot on your device.
- A week or two later, download it again and drop the new ZIP. Everyone who disappeared from your followers in between is shown by name.
That’s the only method that is both accurate and safe. Here’s why.
Why most “unfollower apps” are a bad idea
Since Instagram closed its old API to third-party follower trackers, apps that promise live unfollower alerts usually work in one of two ways: they ask for your username and password and act inside your account, or they show estimated or invented data. The first kind risks your account being locked, rate-limited or even stolen; it also breaks Instagram’s rules. The second just isn’t reliable.
The official data download is different: Instagram generates it for you, it contains your real follower and following lists, and nobody else ever needs access to your account.
Step 1 — Request your followers list
- Open Instagram → your profile → ☰ → Accounts Center.
- Tap Your information and permissions → Download your information → Download or transfer information.
- Choose your Instagram account → Some of your information → tick Followers and following.
- Choose Download to device, date range All time, format JSON.
Instagram e-mails you when the file is ready — often within minutes. See our full download guide for screenshots-free, step-by-step help.
Step 2 — Find who doesn’t follow you back
Drop the ZIP on the Instagram tool. You’ll immediately see:
- Not following back — accounts you follow that don’t follow you, with the date you followed them.
- Fans — people who follow you but you don’t follow back.
- Mutuals and your follow-back rate.
- Pending follow requests you sent that were never accepted.
Step 3 — See who unfollowed you
Your first upload is stored as a snapshot in your own browser (it never leaves your device). Next time you drop a fresh export, Unwrapped compares the two automatically and lists:
- who unfollowed you,
- who newly followed you,
- and who you unfollowed in between.
Tip: repeat every one or two weeks. The shorter the gap, the more precise your unfollower history.
Already downloaded your data before?
If an older Instagram download is still on your computer — even from months ago — you don’t have to wait. Select the old ZIP and the new one at the same time. Unwrapped keeps them apart, shows your latest data and lists everyone who unfollowed you since the older download, right away.
What the results can and can’t tell you
An account that was deactivated or deleted also disappears from your followers, so it can show up as an “unfollow”. And the export reflects Instagram’s data at the moment it was created, which can lag a few hours behind the app. Check a profile before drawing conclusions.
FAQ
Can Instagram tell someone that I checked who unfollowed me?
No. You are only downloading and reading your own data. Nobody is notified.
Can I see who unfollowed me with just one download?
One download shows who doesn’t follow you back right now. To know who stopped following you, you need a second, later download to compare with. If you still have an older download, drop it together with the new one and you’ll see the answer immediately.
Is it free?
Yes — analysis is free, including how many people unfollowed you. Plus shows every name and keeps your full history; Pro adds a safe unfollow queue.
