What Instagram knows about you.

Every like, search and login leaves a trace. By law Instagram must let you download it — and what’s inside is often a surprise.

What’s in your Instagram data

  • Your network — every follower and account you follow, with dates, plus pending requests, close friends and blocked accounts.
  • Your activity — posts you liked, comments, story likes, saved posts and your searches.
  • Your messages — your full DM history, including shared posts and media.
  • Logins — when and from which devices and IP addresses you signed in.
  • Ad interests — topics Instagram assigned to you to target ads.
  • Advertisers using your information — companies that uploaded a customer list that matched you, or that target you based on your activity.

The surprising part: advertisers

Many people find hundreds of companies on that list — shops they visited once, apps they installed, brands they never heard of. Being on it usually means the company uploaded a list of customers or website visitors, and Instagram matched it to your account.

How to see it in minutes

  1. Download your information from Accounts Center (step-by-step guide). Choose “All available information”.
  2. Drop the ZIP on Unwrapped and open Privacy X-ray: advertisers, interests, devices and an exposure grade from A to F.
  3. Open Message viewer to read your full DM history in a readable format.

Everything is opened on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to limit it

  • Ad preferences — Accounts Center → Ad preferences: hide advertisers and review your ad topics.
  • Activity off Meta technologies — clear past activity and disconnect future activity.
  • Where you’re logged in — log out devices you don’t recognize and turn on two-factor authentication.

FAQ

Can I see everything Instagram knows about me?

You can see what Instagram includes in your data download, which covers your account, activity, messages, logins and ad information. Some internal signals are not included.

Is downloading my Instagram data safe?

Yes — it’s an official feature. Just don’t upload the file to sites that send it to a server, because it contains your messages and other people’s names.

Can I delete my data from advertisers?

You can stop seeing ads from them and disconnect off-Meta activity in your settings. To delete data a company holds, you have to contact that company.
