How do I read the messages in my Instagram data download?
The download keeps each chat as JSON or HTML files inside a folder per conversation. Drop the whole ZIP on Unwrapped and open “Message viewer” — every chat is listed and opens like a messenger.
Can I recover deleted Instagram messages?
Your download contains the messages Instagram still has for your account. Messages you deleted or unsent are usually not included, so the viewer can’t bring those back — but chats you can no longer find in the app often are. More about deleted messages.
Are my messages uploaded anywhere?
No. The archive is opened and displayed inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and nobody — including us — can see your chats.
Why don’t I see photos?
Photos and videos are only in the download if you included media. Request the download again with media and a higher quality setting.
Does it work with Facebook Messenger?
Yes. Drop your Facebook “Download your information” ZIP (with Messages) and open Message viewer in the Facebook tab — your Messenger chats open the same way.
