How to download your Instagram data, step by step.

Instagram lets you download a copy of almost everything it stores about you: followers, following, likes, comments, messages, logins and the advertisers that have your information. Here’s exactly how — and which options to choose.

Before you start: which data do you need?

  • Just want to know who doesn’t follow you back or who unfollowed you? Request only Followers and following. It’s tiny and usually ready within minutes.
  • Want DM stats, your most-liked accounts and a privacy check? Request All available information. It’s larger and can take longer.

On the Instagram app (iPhone or Android)

  1. Go to your profile and tap ☰ (top right).
  2. Tap Accounts Center.
  3. Tap Your information and permissions → Download your information.
  4. Tap Download or transfer information and select your Instagram account.
  5. Choose Some of your information (then tick Followers and following) or All available information.
  6. Choose Download to device.
  7. Set Date range: All time, Format: JSON, Media quality: Low.
  8. Tap Create files.

On a computer, the same menu lives at Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information.

JSON or HTML?

JSON is a machine-readable format and the most reliable choice for tools like Unwrapped. HTML is meant for reading in a browser. Unwrapped understands both, but if you can pick, pick JSON.

How long does it take?

Small requests are often ready in minutes; large ones can take hours, and Instagram says up to a few days in rare cases. You’ll get an e-mail and a notification. The download link expires after a few days, so download it soon.

What’s inside the ZIP?

  • connections/followers_and_following/followers_1.json — your followers, with the date each one followed you.
  • following.json — everyone you follow.
  • pending_follow_requests.json, close_friends.json, blocked_profiles.json and more.
  • With “All information”: likes, comments, messages, login activity, and advertisers_using_your_activity_or_information.json.

See every important file explained. You don’t need to unzip anything. Drop the ZIP into Unwrapped as-is — even several ZIP parts at once.

Keep it private

Your export contains personal information, including other people’s names and your messages. Never upload it to a site that sends it to a server. Unwrapped processes it entirely in your browser — you can even turn on airplane mode before dropping it.

FAQ

Why can’t I find “Download your information”?

Instagram moved it into Accounts Center. Look under Accounts Center → Your information and permissions. Make sure your app is up to date.

My followers file seems incomplete. Why?

The export can lag a few hours behind the app and doesn’t include deactivated accounts. Very large accounts may be split across several followers files — they’re all read automatically.

Does downloading my data notify anyone or affect my account?

No. It’s an official feature and only you receive the file.
