Your full Instagram search history.

Instagram’s search box shows a short “Recent” list. Your data download keeps much more — the accounts, words and hashtags you looked up. Useful for finding that account you forgot, and eye-opening for privacy.

In the app: recent searches only

Tap the search tab and the search bar: Instagram lists your recent searches, with “See all” for a longer list. It’s handy, but limited, and anything you cleared is gone from there.

In your data download: the full list

When you download All available information from Instagram, the ZIP contains search files — for example account_searches.json, word_or_phrase_searches.json and tag_searches.json — with each search and when it happened. See every important file explained.

How to read it in two minutes

  1. Request your Instagram data: All available information, format JSON.
  2. Drop the ZIP into Unwrapped. It’s read in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
  3. Open Privacy X-ray: “Your searches” lists them, next to the advertisers and interests Instagram linked to you.

How to clear your Instagram search history

In the app, open search, tap the search bar, then See all → Clear all. You can also remove single searches with the ×. Clearing affects what Instagram shows you; a data download made before clearing still contains the old entries, so delete old ZIPs you no longer need.

FAQ

Can other people see my Instagram searches?

No. Your search history is only visible to you — in the app and in your own data download.

Does Instagram tell someone I searched for them?

No. Searching for an account doesn’t notify it, and reading your download doesn’t either.

Is reading my search history free?

Yes, the first searches are free; seeing the complete list is part of Plus.
