Clean up your socials before a job search.
Many recruiters search candidates online before an interview. A ten-year-old joke can cost you an offer. Here’s a practical checklist — starting with the posts you forgot about.
1. Search your old posts on X
X’s own search misses a lot of old posts. Download your X archive and open Search & clean up: search every post, reply and repost, and run the clean-up check for swearing, alcohol and drug references and personal info. Add your own words — a former employer, an ex, a nickname. Each result opens on X so you can delete it.
2. Review your Instagram comments and likes
Comments you left years ago are still attached to your profile. In the Likes & comments finder, search your comment history by word or account, and check which posts you liked or saved.
3. Look at your own posts and stories
Your posts & stories archive shows everything you published, by year. Archive or delete what no longer represents you — or switch the account to private while you search.
4. Remove personal info
- Phone numbers, e-mail addresses and home addresses in old posts — the clean-up check flags phone numbers and e-mails automatically.
- Your birthday and location in bios and captions.
- Check which apps still have access to your accounts in each platform’s settings.
5. Make your profiles work for you
- Use a clear photo and the same name across platforms.
- Pin a post that shows your work.
- Update your LinkedIn and look at your network map to see which companies you already know people at.
Why do it from your data download?
Tools that log in to your accounts to “clean up” put them at risk. Your official data downloads contain everything you posted, and Unwrapped reads them on your device — nothing is uploaded, and nothing touches your account until you choose to delete a post yourself.
FAQ
Do recruiters really check social media?
Many do, especially for public-facing roles. Treat anything public as part of your application.
Should I delete my accounts instead?
Usually not — a tidy, active profile can help you. Remove what you wouldn’t say in an interview and keep the rest.
Can a tool delete my old posts in bulk?
Bulk deletion needs your login, which is risky. Unwrapped finds the posts and opens each one, so you stay in control and your password stays private.
